In 1796, the Gage family moved into a new homestead in the hamlet of Stoney Creek. Less than 20 years later, their peaceful home was under siege. During the War of 1812, the town was the site of the Battle of Stoney Creek, and today, visitors can mingle with the Gages all year round and watch the battle go down the first weekend in June. The land on which the original building is located is also home to a 100-foot-tall Battlefield Monument and regular events such as Jane Austen–themed celebrations and 19th century Christmas parties.
