Zuruba’s artistic director Martin Bonin and his team showcase their knowledge of Afro-Brazilian percussion at events like the Montreal International Jazz Festival. They teach their students the different rhythms of a range of percussion styles from around the world. Pupils quickly knock the cobwebs off and become familiar with the power of the instruments this school provides. The African percussion classes include an introduction to the djembé, an instrument that is played by hand, as well as memorizing musical phrases and how to perform them. Meanwhile, students of the Afro-Brazilian percussion classes are introduced to the role and techniques of the snare drum, surdo, contrasurdo and tambourine.
